How Much Does a Moving Company Cost?  June 9, 2017 – 04:13 pm

Curious how much hiring a moving company is going to cost you? If so, we certainly hope your bank account is prepared. It’s no secret that relocating to a new house can get expensive – especially when a professional moving company is involved. Despite the pricey expenses though, hiring movers is one of the most convenient and efficient ways to relocate successfully. Here’s a look at how much hiring a moving company will cost to cover a local and interstate move.

Local move

A local move, commonly called an intrastate move, is technically defined as a move within the same state. According to the American Moving and Storage Association, the average cost of an intrastate household move is $2, 300 for four movers at $200 per hour – based on an average weight of 7, 400 pounds. However, those with less than three bedrooms will probably require fewer movers, which will inevitably save money in labor costs.

The price of a local move is based on a flat dollar amount per hour, but what constitutes a “local, ” hourly-rated move varies from state to state. In some states, for instance, if a customer is moving more than 50 miles, the move’s cost will be based on the weight of the shipment instead of the standard hourly rate. Every state’s rules are different, however, so make sure to look into your specific state’s moving regulations first. When in doubt, your moving company should certainly be able to explain what constitutes a local move and a long distance move within your state.

Depending on the state, some local moving companies may offer customers a flat rate option for local moves, in addition to the standard hourly rate option. This flat rate option is equal to the moving company’s estimated number of hours the move will take them, multiplied by that company’s hourly rate.

Interstate move

An interstate move is any long distance move from one state to another. According to the American Moving and Storage Association, the average cost of an interstate move is $4, 300, based on an average weight of 7, 400 pounds and average distance of 1, 225 miles. This average also includes packing and other services that might be needed.

Unlike a local move, the price of an interstate, or “long distance” move, is based on the weight of the shipment, distance traveled and labor costs. You’ll also need to add in the cost of packing services and insurance. Your movers should give you a written estimate of the total cost of your move. If given the choice, make sure to ask for a binding estimate, as this will give you a much more accurate estimation of your move, overall.
